Chapter Six

Spencer flinched. He groaned at the burning sensation on his chest, and his eyes shot open. The agony intensified, and he shifted to get away from the unpleasant feeling. A new pain pierced through his leg. He gritted his teeth to hold back a cry of protest.

“I keep telling you to lie still. You’re not going to heal if you keep trying to jump out of bed.”

Spencer blinked and stared up at the dark-haired vision of loveliness who smiled down at him. It wasn’t a tender smile, but rather one of triumph, as if she enjoyed his discomfort.

“Miss Walker,” he rasped. “What are you doing?”

Brooke Walker sat up straighter, or was she standing? Spencer glanced to the side. He wasn’t lying in an actual bed. It was more like a pile of furs that kept him several inches off the ground. Brooke was beside the pallet, hovering over him.

Her hand reached out and touched his forehead. “Judging by the sweat and your lucid question, I’d say your fever has finally broken.”

Spencer frowned. A dull pain in his head added to his discomfort. “Fever? What happened? Where are we?”

“One question at a time,” Brooke said, sounding and looking like a teacher he’d once had as a young boy. All she needed was a ruler in her hand and . . . no, he wasn’t going to go down that road. Brooke Walker looked nothing like his elementary teachers.

She dabbed something on his chest. If it wasn’t for the instantaneous stinging her action produced, he might even have savored the touch of her fingers against his bare skin. Spencer mentally shook his head. Where had that thought come from? For some reason, vague memories of Brooke filled his mind. She’d been a constant presence lately except he was unclear where or why.

“You’ve sustained quite a few injuries from a mountain lion attack,” Brooke said while she continued to make the skin on his chest sting even more.

“What?” He glanced down to see several angry wounds sliced across his upper body. He’d been attacked by a cougar? He flinched as she continued to torment him by smearing a foul-smelling concoction on him.

“Are you trying to kill me, woman?” Another attempt to move away from her ministrations resulted in more pain in his leg. Spencer groaned and slumped into the furs.

“I think you’ve managed to nearly get yourself killed all on your own,” Brooke said matter-of-factly. “I’ve been trying to save your life, with the help of Keme. Good thing you are a stubborn man, or you probably would be dead by now.”

Spencer stared up at the . . . opening of a teepee. What the blazes was going on here? New memories joined the ones he’d had of Brooke. A shaman relentlessly chanting and beating a drum. Visions of – no. He closed his eyes. He wasn’t going down that path.

“Where are we?” he asked a second time.

Brooke straightened. She wiped her fingers on a cloth, then produced a roll of bandages.
